Friday midday cash livestock markets

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade opened 2.35 lower at 77.28 on a carcass basis, the West is down 3.45 at 75.79, and the East is 2.23 lower at 78.09. The Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady from 70.00 to 72.00. The pork carcass cutout value quickly snapped back from Wednesday’s crash, regaining all of its lost ground and then some. Renewed demand for loins, butts and hams led the way back.

There was a moderate to active cattle trade on Thursday. Best guesses are around 45,000 head traded in Nebraska at mostly 146.00 to 147.00; a regional did pay as much as 148.00. Cattle traded in Kansas and Texas at 91.00. Other than a little clean up trade it sounds like business may be completed for the week. Although plenty of green cattle are showing up on the show lists, producers are probably unwilling to accept lower bids. This means we will probably see a good number of southern cattle carried over into next week. Choice boxed beef is up .75 at 154.18, and select is .10 higher at 146.10.

Feeder cattle receipts at Missouri auctions this week were estimated at 23,952 head. Compared to last week steers under 500 lbs and over 700 lbs sold steady to 2.00 higher, with the mid weight 500 to 700 lb steers steady to 2.00 lower. Feeder steers under 500 lbs steady to 2.00 lower, 550 to 650 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, and heifers over 650 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Feeder steers medium and large 1 weighing 622 pounds traded at an average of 123.57, 621 pound heifers brought 111.58 per hundredweight.
