USDA program would address vet shortages

The USDA is preparing to implement a new program to address veterinary shortages in rural America.

The program would repay the student loans of qualified veterinarians in return for their services in areas suffering from a lack of veterinarians.  Officials say it’s especially important in the area of food animal medicine.

USDA is currently gathering information to determine which areas of the country are experiencing the most critical veterinary shortages.

  • Congress passed the legislation in 2002, then subsequently never appropriated money to fund it. I hope this press announcement means that congress has finally appropriated the money for this program.
