NRCS urges sign-up for new CSP

The new Conservation Stewardship Program has features the old one did not – back when it was called the Conservation Security Program. And, the Natural Resources Conservation Service wants producers to know about them, and, to sign up. NRCS central regional conservationist Tom Christensen tells Brownfield they’ll get credit for conservation practices already in place, “And if they’re a successful applicant who receives a contract then they’ll get an annual payment for that for over each of the five years of the contract. In addition, when they’re working with cropland, there’s a second kind of payment that could be applicable. And, that’s a supplemental payment if a producer chooses to adopt a resource-conserving crop rotation.”
Another new feature of the CSP under the 2008 Farm Bill is on-site verification of potential program lands, “And, that way, we make sure that everybody’s clear on what has been accomplished and what the future expectations are under this contract.”

With the deadline of September 30th approaching for this year, Christensen encourages producers to apply. And, he says they can get more information about it at the USDA/NRCS website, “We have a checklist that a producer can look at, and other materials that they can look at on the web and see more details. And they can go through this checklist and see if they’re well-positioned for this program.”

Christensen says the CSP can help producers take their conservation practices up to the next level.
