Storminess to greet the New Year: Drought relief in the West, on the Plains, across the Corn Belt; severe weather in the South

Precipitation (mostly rain) across the southern and eastern U.S. will shift eastward, ending along the Atlantic Seaboard late Saturday or early Sunday—except for some residual snow in northern New England.

Meanwhile, multiple Pacific storm systems will continue to affect the West, resulting in 5-day precipitation totals of 4 to 10 inches in parts of northern and central California.  Significant precipitation should also occur in the Great Basin, Intermountain West, and Southwest.

New Year’s Eve (Saturday) and New Year’s Day (Sunday) will feature precipitation ending in the eastern U.S. and stormy weather from California to the Four Corners States.  Early next week, the storm system currently affecting the Far West will cross the central Rockies and intensify over the central Plains.  Potential impacts early next week include wind-driven snow from the central Rockies into the upper Midwest.

Additionally, outbreaks of heavy showers and locally severe thunderstorms will occur across the South.
