Rains to return to much of the Plains, Corn Belt

A storm system over the Southwest will drift eastward, delivering significant rain from the central and southern Plains into the middle and southern Atlantic States.

Rainfall could reach 1 to 3 inches in many areas, with totals topping an inch as far north as the Ohio and middle Mississippi Valleys.

Pockets of flash flooding and locally severe thunderstorms may accompany the weather system, starting later Tuesday on the southern Plains and sweeping into the Southeast by Thursday.

Toward week’s end, a trailing storm may deliver a chilly rain to parts of the Midwest.

For much of the week, below-normal temperatures will linger across the Midwest and Northeast, while warmth will expand in the West.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of cooler-than-normal weather in most areas from the Mississippi Valley to the East Coast, while warmer-than-normal weather will prevail in southern Florida and from the Pacific Coast to the Plains.

Meanwhile, near- or below-normal precipitation across much of the western and central U.S. should contrast with wetter-than-normal conditions in the East and Pacific Northwest.
