Much colder air ahead for much of the Nation; an active Winter pattern for most

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for a transition to cooler weather nationwide, with below-normal temperatures in the western and central U.S. and near-normal temperatures in the East.  Any lingering warmth should be confined to coastal New England.

Meanwhile, near- or above-normal precipitation in most areas east of the Rockies will contrast with drier-than-normal weather in the West.
