More snow & ice next week for the northern U.S.; severe storms to threaten the southern states

The holiday weekend will feature mostly tranquil weather across the U.S., but a more active pattern will return early next week.

By late Monday, a significant winter storm will begin to unfold from the Pacific Northwest to the northern Plains, accompanied by gusty winds and trailed by a surge of very cold air.

On Tuesday, cold, stormy weather will shift to other areas of the western U.S., while snow will continue to spread eastward across the nation’s northern tier.
