Cold pattern to moderate; drier days for the Heartland

During the next 5 days, most areas of the country will receive only light precipitation. In fact, completely dry weather should prevail on the central Plains and from central and southern California to the southern Rockies. Farther north, however, unsettled, showery weather will persist into early next week from the Pacific Northwest to the northern and central Rockies.

Elsewhere, accumulating snow may fall early next week from the Great Lakes region into northern New England, while 5-day rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches or more across the waterlogged interior Southeast.

Temperatures across the central and eastern U.S. will quickly rebound over the next couple of days, but a subsequent surge of cold air will engulf much of the country during the early to middle part of next week.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of near- or below-normal temperatures nationwide, except for warmer-than-normal weather across parts of the northern Plains, upper Great Lakes region, and Florida.

Meanwhile, below-normal precipitation in most areas from the Pacific Coast to the northern Plains and upper Midwest should contrast with wetter-than-normal conditions across much of the southern and eastern U.S.
