Tuesday, a low-pressure system will emerge from the western U.S. and begin to cross the nation’s mid-section. The storm system should reach peak intensity early Thursday while crossing the Great Lakes region, before drifting northward into Canada. Along the storm’s trailing cold front, severe thunderstorms should develop by Tuesday evening across the central and southern Plains. At mid-week, the severe-weather threat will shift to the lower Mississippi Valley and environs. Although the risk of severe weather will diminish by Thursday, lingering strong thunderstorms could sweep toward the southern Atlantic Coast. Meanwhile, 5-day rainfall totals should reach 1 to 2 inches or more in parts of the mid-South, Midwest, and Southeast. Heavy, mid-week snow will briefly accumulate across the upper Great Lakes region. In the storm’s wake, freezes may occur as far south as the southern High Plains.
