A storm system traversing the Midwest will begin to weaken and will drift north of the Great Lakes region by Thursday night. Meanwhile, a low-pressure system will develop along the storm’s trailing cold front and race northward, maintaining showery weather along the Atlantic Seaboard through Thursday and across New England into Friday. Additional rainfall could total 1 to 2 inches or more in the Atlantic Coast States and portions of the Great Lakes region. The threat of severe weather will gradually diminish, although strong thunderstorms may occur through Wednesday night in the southeastern Corn Belt and the middle and southern Atlantic States. Any lingering thunderstorms along the southern Atlantic Coast should end late Thursday. During the weekend, significantly cooler air will overspread the Midwest and East, leading to the threat of frost and near-freezing temperatures on Sunday morning as far south as northern sections of Alabama and Georgia. Elsewhere, Western warmth will spread eastward, reaching the Plains during the weekend and early next week. In addition, little or no precipitation will fall during the next 5 days from the Pacific Coast to the Plains.
