A low-pressure system currently crossing the north-central U.S. will reach eastern Canada late in the week. The storm system’s trailing cold front will generate a few mid- to late-week showers from the Midwest into the East. Meanwhile, a significant pattern change will result in widespread Western storminess, leading to likely soil moisture improvements and drought relief. During the next 5-days, the heaviest precipitation will fall across northern California and the Northwest. In fact, totals through the weekend could reach 4 to 8 inches or more along the northern Pacific Coast, as well as the northern Sierra Nevada and southern Cascades. In contrast, little or no precipitation will fall from southern California to the central and southern High Plains. During the weekend, precipitation will return across parts of the Midwest, with some locations receiving rainfall exceeding an inch.
