A low-pressure system crossing the western U.S. will drift northeastward, reaching the Great Lakes region by midweek and eastern Canada by week’s end. The storm’s trailing cold front will briefly become active, generating some Eastern showers on Thursday and Friday. A modest surge of cool air into the central and eastern U.S. will follow the cold front’s passage. Meanwhile, Western storminess will return late in the week, mainly across northern California and Pacific Northwest. Five-day precipitation totals could reach 2 inches or more along the Pacific Coast as far south as northern California, and an inch or more in scattered locations from the northern Inter- mountain West into the Great Lakes region. In contrast, little or no rain will fall during the next 5 days from southern California to the central and southern Plains.
