Much of the country will receive little or no rain during the next 5 days, while blazing heat will cover California and the Desert Southwest. Late in the week, however, increasing shower activity in the Midwest could result in 1- to 2-inch rainfall totals. Meanwhile, a broad area of low pressure over the southern Gulf of Mexico will drift northward, with tropical cyclone formation likely by Friday. The system may result in excessive rainfall and flooding in the already-soggy central Gulf Coast region. Heavy rain could also spread into the Southeast.
