A storm system currently crossing the Canadian Prairies will move northeastward, dragging a trailing cold front across the Plains and Midwest. Around mid-week, a secondary low-pressure system will develop along the cold front, helping to enhance rainfall across the eastern U.S. Storm-total rainfall could reach 1 to 2 inches or more in the Southeast and the middle and northern Atlantic States. In late March, locally severe thunderstorms may affect the Southeast. On Wednesday and Thursday, precipitation across parts of the interior Northeast will change to snow before ending. A short-lived surge of cold air will trail the storm, possibly resulting in freezes Friday morning as far south as Alabama and Georgia. In contrast, potential record-setting warmth will develop by week’s end across the northern Plains and parts of the western U.S.
