Extreme heat will persist across the western half of the country for several more days, although cooler air will arrive late in the week across the Pacific Northwest. Meanwhile, below-normal temperatures will dominate the eastern half of the U.S., except for lingering heat, humidity, and showers across the lower Southeast. In fact, Southeastern precipitation could total 1 to 3 inches or more during the next 5 days, while other areas of the country (excluding a few locations across the nation’s northern tier) will receive little or no rain.
