Beneficial rains build on the Great Plains

On the Plains, cooler weather accompanies an increase in clouds and precipitation. Currently, some of the most significant and beneficial rain is developing across the High Plains. Prior to this event, topsoil moisture was rated 68% very short to short in Kansas, along with 56% in Oklahoma, 48% in Texas, and 40% in Colorado.

Across the Corn Belt, dry weather accompanies near- to above-normal temperatures. Planting preparations are underway across the southern Corn Belt, as field conditions permit.

In the South, overnight thunderstorms caused local wind and hail damage in parts of Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Currently, scattered showers and thunderstorms are crossing the southern Atlantic States, excluding Florida—which remains unfavorably dry with topsoil moisture rated 64% very short to short.

In the West, a northward shift in the Pacific storm track has brought a return of dry weather to California and the Great Basin. Showery weather lingers, however, across the Pacific Northwest. Meanwhile, locally heavy, high-elevation snow is falling across the central and southern Rockies.
