A mid-winter pattern of cold, increasing snowfall ahead for much of the Heartland

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of colder-than-normal conditions nationwide, except for near- or above normal temperatures in New England and northern New York.

Meanwhile below-normal precipitation in northern California, the Great Basin, and the Northwest, as well as an area stretching from the Ohio Valley to the mid-Atlantic and southern New England, should contrast with wetter-than-normal weather across the remainder of the country, including the Plains, Deep South, and upper Midwest.
