Ohio Cattlemen to hold referendum

OCA office sign (1)_EditNow that the necessary signatures have been collected and verified by the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) has met the requirements to conduct a referendum to increase the beef checkoff in Ohio.

“Where beef producers would have the opportunity to vote as to whether or not they want to increase the checkoff in Ohio, the beef checkoff from $1 per head to $2 per head,” said Elizabeth Harsh, Executive Director of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association.

Harsh tells Brownfield the additional $1 will stay in Ohio.

“With the need we have, with the huge population base here in Ohio, that dollar increase will all remain here in Ohio,” Harsh said. “We’ve got tremendous opportunities in terms of what we can do to further our efforts about promoting beef in the classroom and working with health professionals, so that dollar would remain here in Ohio.”

Harsh expects voting to take place in mid to late January 2014, with a three day in-person vote at County Extension offices in March.
