Findlay on trade: Let’s put our foot on the gas pedal

New American Soybean Association CEO Ryan Findlay says the administration needs to be aggressive in its trade initiatives.  Findlay says the message regarding NAFTA renegotiation is to do no harm, but he says the U.S. can’t forget about the agreements left on the table when it exited the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

“Whether that is the message that maybe we had from the White House a couple of weeks ago tilting that we would consider looking at TPP again in the future, that would be awesome,” Findlay told Brownfield Ag News at the Commodity Classic ASA Stage in Anaheim, California.  “If we could do that that would be ideal; if not, then we need to get to work right now on bilaterals.”

Findlay says NAFTA is important and TPP countries are important, but the big one is China.  Even though $14 billion worth of soybeans go to China annually, he says there’s room for more.

“And our message to the administration is ‘let’s not be protectionist, let’s not back off, let’s put our foot on the gas pedal a little bit and try and help U.S. industries develop a mechanism to export more,’” said Findlay.
