The results of the Beef Industry Sustainability Assessment were released at the 2013 Cattle Industry Summer Conference in Denver.

Two years in the making, the assessment examined all the inputs and outputs required to produce a pound of boneless, edible beef in the 1970’s, 2005 and 2011.  It shows major advances have been made in the sustainability of beef production, with an overall improvement of five percent in just the past six years.

Kim Stackhouse-Lawson, who directed the checkoff-funded study for NCBA, says improvements in crop yields, better irrigation, innovations in the packing sector and improvements in technology are examples of innovations that have all played a role in advancing industry sustainability

So will it be enough to quiet those critics of beef production?  That’s one of the questions we put to Stackhouse-Lawson during our visit in Denver.
