Young farmers discuss 2020 growing season plans

Two young farmers from south central Indiana are taking advantage of opportunities ahead of the 2020 growing season.

Michelle and Matthew Tobias have livestock, row crops, and hay production in Edinburgh.

“We’ve had a few retirements in our area, and I’ve been able to pick up some newer equipment from auctions,” he says. “We don’t have a lot of extra cash laying around for equipment purchases, but there’s some lower equipment prices on some of those auctions that’s been able to help us upgrade some of our equipment and will hopefully make us be a little more efficient.”

Matthew Tobias says planning ahead is critical.

“We both work off farm so our time is of the essence, so we have to have equipment ready to go and ready to work this next year,” he says.

Michelle Tobias says diversification is also top of mind for them.

“We’re trying to make those decisions- are we going to diversify a little bit more into 2020 and are we going to put more ground into hay versus a traditional row crop,” she says. “We’re looking and analyzing all of that for 2020.”

Brownfield interviewed the couple at the Indiana Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ag Professionals Conference.
