Wisconsin’s first soybean crushing facility planned

A Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board leader says the state’s first soybean crushing facility might be open in time for the 2020 harvest.

Robert Karls says the proposed plant in the Waupun Industrial Park would have several benefits.  “Fewer trucks wearing down our roads, and also it will help Wisconsin because somebody will be benefiting within the state of making a profit off of that process, the crush, and then hopefully have a better price for the meal for our livestock farmers.”

And, Karls says cutting the cost of transporting soybeans will help create better margins for farmers.  “The site that we’re at has an excellent rail siding.  The road infrastructure right there is very close to state highway 151.  It’s a good proximity to get to the livestock and it’s a good proximity to get beans because a lot of soybeans are being produced within 100-mile area around the property.”

Karls says 39 employees will be able to process up to 100-thousand bushels of soybeans daily, and produce about 3-thousand tons of soy meal, soy protein and soy oil each day.
