Wisconsin has three new avian influenza cases

Wisconsin has three new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza, bringing the total number of affected premises to seven.  The state now has four non-commercial or backyard flocks and three commercial flocks affected by the virus.

Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection officials say 20-thousand birds will be depopulated from a commercial turkey farm operated by Jenny-O near Centuria in Polk County.   Forty-four birds in Columbia County and 15 birds in Sheboygan County also tested positive for the disease.

The new farms bring the state’s number of affected birds to just over 2.8 million.  Ag department officials say 2.7 million laying hens were affected at Cold Springs Egg Farm near Palmyra, Wisconsin and the six most recent cases lost a total of 66,700 turkeys, chickens, and ducks.
