The Presidents of Wisconsin’s two biggest farm organizations support a bill in the U.S. House establishing a dairy pricing commission to help struggling dairy farmers.

Wisconsin Farmer’s Union President Darin Von Ruden tells Brownfield reforms to the Federal Milk Marketing Orders would also be open for discussion. “And they need to be. You know it’s been too long since they’ve been looked at. The pricing structure, the pricing mechanism that we’re currently using is getting to be outdated. We need to find another way to price the product at the farm level.”

Wisconsin Farm Bureau’s President Joe Bragger tells Brownfield this commission is something dairy farmers need right now. “There will be a farm bill right around the corner. This is a perfect time to start planning, to start making some recommendations, and bringing farmers and industry together for the benefit of our dairy farmers.”

Democrat Ron Kind and Republican Mike Gallagher recently introduced the Dairy Pricing and Policy Commission Act in the U.S. House.  So far, there is no Senate companion bill.
