Wisconsin farmer suffers devastating alfalfa loss

A northwest Wisconsin dairy farmer faces the prospect of harvesting none of his alfalfa this year.

Dan Holub of Cadott says winterkill has wiped out nearly all 200 acres.

“I don’t really see much I’ll be able to salvage. It’s going to have to be planted to corn.”

From February on, he tells Brownfield his alfalfa endured frigid temperatures and freezing rain causing ice sheeting.

In 56 years, Holub says he’s never seen losses like this.

“I’ve been farming almost 40 years myself, and this is definitely the worst. Usually you get pockets or parts of fields or something.”

Most of his alfalfa ground will either be put into corn or seeded with oats and peas.

Holub says he’ll continue buying alfalfa from out west.
