Wisconsin Farm Bureau reviews ’21, tackles policy at annual meeting

Wisconsin Farm Bureau looks back at 2021 successes and ahead at issues affecting farmers.

Wisconsin Farm Bureau President Kevin Krentz tells Brownfield there were significant actions… and inactions this year.  “From the NR151 (runoff management) updates that the DNR was pushing through all the way up to last Friday and the ag export bill that passed and was signed into law.”

Krentz says the state’s NR151 water quality proposals offered by the DNR have expired and must start from scratch.  The new export assistance law marks the first time the state has budgeted money to help improve Wisconsin agricultural exports.

Farm Bureau delegates will vote on resolutions Monday.  Krentz says the resolutions and amendments have not been released yet, but there are issues farmers are talking about that might be voted on.  “There’s a lot of discussion around the solar projects that are coming into Wisconsin, again, supporting the diverse local meat industry that we have in Wisconsin and continuing to support those businesses, along with supply chain disruptions.  There’s a lot of discussion around supply chains, and above all there will be a discussion on dairy on Monday morning, on dairy pricing.”

On Sunday, Wisconsin Farm Bureau recognized Kellie Zahn as the winner of the Young Farmer and Agriculturist Excellence in Agriculture Award.  Julie Wadzinski of Rice Lake won the Young Farmer and Agriculturalist Discussion Meet.  The Collegiate Discussion Meet winner was Emma Buss from UW-Platteville.  John and Dorothy Priske of Fall River were recognized for winning the state’s 2021 Leopold Conservation Award. The late Jeff Hicken was honored with Farm Bureau’s Distinguished Service to Wisconsin Agriculture award for his work as an educator and state FFA advisor.
