Wisconsin egg, milk production down

Wisconsin’s egg production remains below month-ago and year-ago levels.  USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service says the November production was 144 million eggs, which is down 3% from October but 20% lower than November of 2021.  The year-to-year drop might be tied to highly pathogenic avian influenza, which took over a million laying hens from a single producer last winter.

Wisconsin milk production in November totaled 2.58 billion pounds, up one percent from a year ago.  USDA says the overall number of milk cows didn’t change, staying around 1.27 million head in October and November, but that’s six thousand fewer dairy cows than in November of 2021.  Per-cow production averaged 2,030 pounds, up 35 pounds per cow from a year ago.
