Wisconsin crops survive a chilly week

Wisconsin had cooler weather last week, with some frost damage to newly-emerged crops.  The USDA reporters say just over four days were suitable for fieldwork, but some areas like Portage and Wood counties had over 2 inches of rain.  There were also severe storms with hail reported in northern Wisconsin and even some snow in the western part of the state.

Most corn is planted and 77% has emerged.  Wisconsin’s corn is about nine days ahead of the five-year average.

Most soybeans are planted with 63% of the crop emerged, which is about 11 days ahead of average.

First crop alfalfa harvest ranges from 11% done in north central Wisconsin to more than 40% finished near Lake Michigan.

Ninety-eight percent of the oats are in the ground with most of them emerged.  So far, 84% of the oats are in good to excellent condition.

Potatoes are nearly all planted, and 91% are rated good to excellent.

Winter wheat is 34% headed and 90% of the crop is in good to excellent condition.
