Wisconsin crops good, but moisture hampers field work

original_imagesWisconsin’s crops continue to look good, but Mother Nature is making it difficult to get in the field.

It’s been too wet for many Wisconsin farmers to make hay, and the moisture levels are making farmers wonder about possible muddy harvesting conditions for other crops.  The USDA crop report says Wisconsin farmers barely had four days for fieldwork between showers. ‘

As of Sunday, 85% of Wisconsin’s corn was in or beyond the dough stage.

Some farmers say they’re chopping corn silage now, with about 3% of that harvest complete.  They also say wet conditions contributed to late-season mold and diseases in soybeans.   Nearly all of the state’s soybeans have set pods and 10% of the plants are starting to turn color.

While corn and soybeans are ahead of schedule, the potato harvest is running 23 days behind last year.  The spuds are rated 87% good to excellent.  Winter wheat seeding is also getting underway in some regions.
