Wisconsin crops doing well despite no significant rain & cool temps

Wisconsin farmers focused on chopping corn silage and fourth-crop hay.  It was a cool week with daytime highs in the 60’s and 70’s, and some overnight lows dipping into the 30’s with scattered thunderstorms bringing small amounts of moisture.

The central sands region is behind the rest of the state on fourth-crop hay, with only 26% cut.  Nearly half of the fourth-crop is harvested elsewhere in Wisconsin.

Ninety-four percent of Wisconsin’s corn is now at or beyond the dough stage and 65% of the corn is dented.  Seventy-eight percent of the state’s corn is rated good to excellent.

Half of the state’s soybeans are coloring, with 12% dropping leaves.  Nearly all of the oats are harvested.  The potato harvest continues at full speed with 40% of the crop now out of the fields.

Farmers are two weeks ahead of average with winter wheat planting now 22% complete.

Nearly a third of the state’s topsoil is short or very short of moisture with 66% of the state reporting adequate moisture.
