Wisconsin crops are doing well after recent rains

Last week’s scattered showers helped many crops.  USDA reporters say 67% of the state’s topsoil has adequate moisture, with 13% surplus, 13% short, and 7% very short.

More than 60% of Wisconsin’s corn is in the dough stage with 97% of the corn silking.  Eighty percent of the corn is in good to excellent condition which is 3% better than last week.

Ninety-seven percent of the state’s soybeans are blooming with 83% setting pods.  Some USDA reporters said some beans were beginning to color.  Seventy-seven percent of the crop is rated good to excellent, which is also up 3% from a week ago.

Wisconsin’s potato crop is now 20% harvested with 94% of the crop rated good to excellent.

Fifty-four percent of the state’s oats are now harvested, and 71% of the crop is rated good to excellent.

Ninety-six percent of winter wheat for grain is harvested.

Most areas of the state are finished or close to finished with third crop alfalfa hay.  The north-central part of the state is still struggling with growth, with only 39% harvested.  Elsewhere, many farmers are starting on fourth-crop hay with 4% of it cut.
