Winter wheat planting underway in Kansas

Kansas crop condition movements were mixed over the past week, while winter wheat planting is getting underway.

The USDA says 4% of winter wheat is planted, matching the normal pace.

53% of corn is in good to excellent shape, down 1% on the week, with 89% of the crop dented, compared to the five-year average of 88%, 45% of the crop mature, compared to 47% on average, and 11% is harvested, compared to 10% typically in mid-September.

59% of soybeans are called good to excellent, 2% higher, with 92% at the pod setting stage, compared to the usual rate of 95%, and 20% dropping leaves, in-line with the five-year average.

56% of sorghum is rated good to excellent, unchanged, with 79% coloring, compared to 76% on average, 20% mature, compared to 14% normally this time of year, and 1% harvested, matching the average pace.

47% of cotton is reported as good to excellent, a drop of 7%, with 96% setting bolls, compared to 89% on average, and 38% of those bolls opening, compared to the five-year average of 22%.

42% of pastures and rangelands are in good to excellent condition, up 2%, and more than half of the state has adequate soil moisture.
