“Window of opportunity” for planting should open next week

Brownfield’s meteorologist says a window of opportunity for planting should open for some farmers next week.

Greg Soulje tells Brownfield some regions of the Corn Belt could get one to four inches of rain or more in the next day or two, but after that…

“There will be opportunities to make some incremental improvement to planting progress in those same water-logged areas of the central and southern Corn Belt and east central plains later next week and probably another week or so after that.”

Soulje says the month of May will be abnormally cool which could impact emerging crops in some areas.

“There may be some reoccurring frosts and freezes to contend with in those areas that are emerged over parts of the northern and central plains and western and northern Corn Belt. Cool temperatures mean cool soil readings and slower growth and development.”

He says conditions across the Midwest are expected to stay cooler and wetter than average through the beginning of summer.
