Widely variable December weather for Ohio

December weather was variable across Ohio.

The USDA says heavy lake effect snow fell during the early part of December, mostly in northeastern areas, and while the average temperature was just above normal and precipitation was only a little bit below typical levels, the generally damp conditions and fluctuating temperatures stressed livestock.

Only a small amount of corn remains in the fields and 72% of winter wheat is in good to excellent shape, up 3% on the month with no major freeze and thaw events reported.

Soil moisture levels ticked higher across the state.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition numbers resume in April.
