What’s next in grain markets?

Grain and soybean futures have been trending higher, fueled in part by optimism over the phase one trade agreement with China.

According to INTL FCStone market analyst Arlan Suderman, the next event with market moving potential is the January 10th crop production report from the USDA.

“(It’s) the next piece of the equation, to see if we have any more surprises left over from the 2019 crop,” Suderman says. “Once we move beyond that, there’s a sense of cautious optimism that maybe the worst is behind us.”

Speculation on 2020 acreage scenarios will also come into play.

“There’s about 15 million acres that are expected to come back into corn and soybean production—and so that will increase the availability of supplies with the 2020 crops.”

With soil moisture profiles running full in many areas, spring weather forecasts will also be a factor, Suderman says.
