Weekly Crop Progress in Minnesota

Rain and cool temperatures in Minnesota limited field work last week.  According to USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service, there were less than three days suitable for the week ending May 24th.

Frost was reported over the northern two-thirds of the state.

The first corn condition rating came in at 69 percent good to excellent with 88 percent of the crop emerged.

Soybean planting advanced 9 points to 88 percent complete with 49 percent emerged.

For small grains, Minnesota’s barley acreage is rated 58 percent good to excellent, improving two percentage points for the week.

Oat condition is 78 percent good to excellent with 56 percent at or beyond joint stage.

Spring wheat at or beyond joint stage advanced to 35 percent, the highest it’s been in almost 40 years with condition rated 67 percent good to excellent.

Dry edible beans were 59 percent planted and 26 percent emerged, more than a week ahead of normal.

And 65 percent of the sunflower acreage has been planted, 8 days ahead of average.
