Website on RR Soybeans-1 going off patent

By the 2015 planting season, the first generation of Monsanto’s Round Up Ready Soybeans will be coming off patent. Norm Sissons is Monsanto Soybean Product manager. He tells Brownfield Ag News, “That gives farmers some new choices in terms of how they can legally save seed for planting. Farmers have a lot of questions about that and so we’ve launched a news site, Soybeans-dot-com, to help answer a lot of those questions.”

He says the new website will answer questions and clarify information about patent laws that apply.  Sissons says the website is meant to help growers make the right choices, “Although the RoundUp Ready-One technology is going off patent there are also additional variety patents that some seed companies may have on their varieties that may limit your availability to save that particular seed. So, you need to be aware of that and you also need to be aware that traits like RoundUp Ready 2 Yield soybeans that we offer are still protected under patent and can’t be saved.”
