Weather slows some planting progress in Tennessee

Cool and cloudy conditions hindered planting progress for some farmers last week.  And freezing temperatures in higher elevations led to isolated damage to wheat crops.

Corn planting is 26 percent complete, a 15 percent jump from last week, with 5 percent of the crop emerged.  Soybean planting is 2 percent complete.

Fall-planted wheat is rated 75 percent good to excellent with 79 percent of the crop jointed and 10 percent headed.  Pastures are rated 57 percent good to excellent.  Sixty-eight percent of the apple crop is in full bloom.  Seventy-two percent of strawberries are rated good to excellent.

Ninety-five percent of topsoil and 96 percent of subsoil are called adequate to surplus.
