Weather impacting Tennessee crops, livestock

Tennessee saw wide-ranging weather during December.

The USDA says that by mid-month, temperatures dropped in most of the state, impacting livestock, pasture and forage, winter wheat, and infrastructure conditions.

40% of Tennessee’s winter wheat crop is called good to excellent, a drop of 15% on the month, and while soil moisture has generally improved, statewide monthly rainfall was below normal.

57% of cattle are rated good to excellent, 60% of pastures and rangelands are called fair to good, and three quarters of the state has adequate forage.

The USDA’s next set of state crop and weather stories is out January 31st.
