Weather conditions delaying field work in northern Illinois

A Bayer agronomist says harvest has mainly wrapped up in northern Illinois, but progress with field work is a different story.

Jim Donnelly tells Brownfield saturated warmer conditions have not provided  solid ground for farmers to do field work.

“No doubt about it, we are going to be a little bit behind the eight-ball going into spring and it’s something that guys are just going to have to manage from a residue standpoint, fertility, etc.”

Donnelly says the geographical length of the state and the diverse weather conditions, makes the growing season longer the further south you farm in Illinois.

“And that in and of itself just provides a little bit more flexibility in southern Illinois compared to up here. Honestly, it is like two different worlds.”

He says there are a few fields left with crops still standing in his area, but not the amount remaining in the northern plains.
