Water-logged summer for NW Minnesota farmer

It’s been a water-logged summer for a soybean and wheat farmer in northwestern Minnesota.

Theresia Gillie of Hallock says conditions were practically perfect in the spring.

“But then we got into June and got some excessive rain over a series of days. The young crops really struggled with being underwater.”

She tells Brownfield rains kept coming week after week.

“I mean, if you only got two inches you were lucky. I’ve gotten over 18 inches here, but now the last few weeks I’ve only gotten a half to .75 (of rain). And it’s amazing (how) the ground is recovering.”

But Gillie still expects significant crop losses because of the excessive moisture.

Gillie is a past president of the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association.
