Watching for more revisions to Hogs and Pigs report

The USDA’s Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report has made several adjustments to farrowing intentions in the last two years and a livestock market analyst says that’s negative to the hog market.

University of Missouri’s Scott Brown says that is one area of Friday’s report he’s watching.  “That revision has only been adding pigs to the mix,” he says.  “We might end up where we have more pigs than we’ve anticipated in those previous reports.”

He tells Brownfield processing capacity is set to expand in 2017 and that could impact sow inventory.  “Whether we see producers that might be holding a few more sows trying to fill some of that processing capacity that is coming on board,” he says.  “It will be very interesting to watch that report on the sow side as well.”

The report comes out Friday at 12 Eastern/11am Central.
