What to watch in the USDA acreage report

For farmers who have made forward sales and have price protection, the USDA acreage report on Monday, June 30 probably isn’t that big of a deal. For others, the report may make them a little nervous.

Tom Grisafi, Risk Management Advisor at Advance Trading says anything can happen.

“It’s a moving target, the yields moving, the acreage is moving, does the government account for recent flooded out acres or prevented planting, maybe not, so maybe they tell the crops huge and then as the months go on we find out the crop really isn’t that big, ” said Grisafi. “I’d keep an eye on the relationship of corn planted acres and soybean planted acres, that’s what I’ll be most interested in watching.”

The USDA acreage report will be released on Monday at noon Eastern.
