Walmart will require suppliers to use blockchain

Walmart is requiring all leafy green vegetable suppliers to use blockchain technology to improve food safety for customers.

The company says it currently takes about a week to trace the source of food in the store but blockchain will cut that time to less than two seconds which will significantly reduce the amount of food safety issues like with E. coli outbreaks or food recalls.

Walmart partnered with IBM to use the IBM Food Trust platform which will track all segments food went through before being sold to end users.

The company has been piloted the technology for the past two years.  Blockchain technology allows multiple users to track transactions and has the potential to track food from the field to consumers.
