Voting open on Michigan cherry program

Michigan’s sweet and tart growers need to decide if they wish to continue the state’s checkoff program for another five years.

The Michigan Cherry Promotion and Development Program was established in 1992 to improve marketing opportunities for Michigan cherries.  Growers are currently assessed $10 per ton for sweet and tart cherries and $5 per ton for cherries sold for juice.

Producers are eligible to vote if they produced cherries valued at more than $800 at first point-of-sale in any of the last three years.

More than 50 percent of the votes cast by growers, representing more than 50 percent of production on the cast ballots, must approve it by February 18th for it to continue.
