Vote underway for Michigan propane checkoff

Michigan’s propane industry is conducting a referendum which would create a checkoff program like agricultural ones in the state.

The vote this month is a follow up to Michigan’s Propane Commission Act signed in December by Governor Gretchen Witmer.

Retail propane marketers have until the end of the month to vote on the referendum which would collect an initial assessment of one-tenth of one cent per gallon of odorized propane sold in the state.

The Commission, to be housed in the Michigan Department of Agriculture, would use the assessment dollars to fund education and outreach for the safe use of propane as well as high efficiency appliances and equipment. 

The Act was sponsored by state Senator Ed McBroom of the Upper Peninsula and supported by Michigan Propane Gas Association.

Propane commissions are active in 14 states and Ohio is also currently conducting a referendum similar to Michigan.
