Vilsack: U.S. ag trade needs to deepen and diversify

U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack tells Brownfield one of the most valuable lessons he learned from his time at the U.S. Dairy Export Council is that trade is about presence.

“You have to have more people on the ground promoting, more partnerships with organizations in-country so you better understand the market, and you have to have more promotions,” he shares.

Vilsack says trade also needs to be diverse which he hopes to work on in his second stint as Secretary. “That we don’t just rely on one or two markets as we have in the past, that puts us at risk and I think we need to look at other countries and other parts of the world—Southeast Asia, Africa—and we also need to enforce trade agreements,” he says.

Brownfield interviewed Vilsack during his recent visit to Michigan.
