Vilsack says farm bill passage is critical

US Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the 2023 Farm Bill will be pivotal to the rural economy.

“I don’t think I’m alone in being concerned about the fact we’ve got farmers who are doing quite well – and more power to them – but we got a lot of farmers that aren’t,” Vilsack said. “We want to keep them on the land. We want to create new ways for them to profit from their farming operation.”

He says he is not concerned about the amount of new congressional members that have never debated a farm bill.

“Each of those members has staff, and I suspect those staff members are heavily steeped in farm bill politics and farm bill policy,” Vilsack said. “I think they will be able to bring those members up to speed relatively quickly.”

Vilsack says he’s optimistic the farm bill will get passed this year.

He spoke to reporters at the 2023 American Farm Bureau Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
