Vilsack: Mexico and U.S. have some common NAFTA goals

A dairy industry leader says the U.S. and Mexico have some common goals when re-opening the NAFTA trade agreement.  Dairy Export Council President Tom Vilsack tells Brownfield one area of agreement involves sanitary and phytosanitary rules restricting market access.  The other involves an ongoing battle with the European Union.  “There’s also I think a consensus between Mexican and American producers that we want to avoid the use of geographic indications involving cheese products that have common names.”

Vilsack also says the NAFTA talks might happen at the same time the European Union is discussing trade with Mexico.  “I think there’s a recognition on the part of the Mexican government that they have to balance those two negotiations out to see what can be done best for their country.”

Vilsack says when NAFTA is discussed, the U.S. and Mexico will want to resolve market access issues with Canada, which is blocking products including ultra-filtered milk.
