VFD could cause provider changes

A Wisconsin agriculture official says the Veterinary Feed Directive, which goes into effect January 1, could trigger changes at local suppliers.

Agriculture Resources Administrator John Petty tells Brownfield the VFD will require additional record keeping and management of medicated feeds and additives.  “Now, before you can sell that legally to a livestock owner, you’re going to have to see that VFD, make sure that everything is adequate there, and maintain the records.  For some people, they may not think it’s worth it.”

Petty says other feed related businesses will benefit from taking on more VFD related orders. “I think for the folks that want to get in, they may see a niche that in their particular business structure, they see an opportunity there.”

Petty says producers will need to work closely with their veterinarian to comply with the new law.
